If ambient occlusion is not working, your sfm is likely using intel graphics (and you may well be getting errors about your gpu not supporting directx 9 shader model 3). My screen is 1080i so when i do that it looks very blurry, but i guess it's necessary if i want posters with proper ambient occlusion. However, if your computer has an nvidia 620m, that gpu should (to the best of my knowledge) work for ambient occlusion (it won't be great performance, but it will work).

You can find the slots at trello. In the dialog box for your render settings, check the box adjacent from the ambient occlusion setting which reads enable. I forced my resolution to 1080p, took off the guardband command and it's fixed!
